Forests of giant Kauri

Kauri Forests

Less than one hour's drive inland from Kerikeri are the beautiful Puketi and Omahuta Forests. Together, they form one of the largest areas of native forest in New Zealand. Puketi and Omahuta are havens for endangered wildlife, including Kiwi, kaka and kokako. These ancient Kauri forests are home to some the most impressive stands of the giant tree in New Zealand.

In Puketi Forest, visitors can see Te Tangi o te tui Puketi, the fourth largest living Kauri tree that towers 50.9 metres tall with a diameter of almost 4 metres!

In Omahuta Forest you can visit Hokianga, the 8th largest kauri in New Zealand and possibly the tallest tree in Northland at a whopping 53.3 metres.

If you enjoy tramping, there are some brilliant longer walks and hikes here.

The forests also boast easy and short walks along well-established and wheelchair accessible trails to see mighty Kauri trees that are some 800 years old!
